Preserving The Union

President Lincoln worried that nations of Europe would intervene in the War on the side of the Confederacy. Thus, in 1863, he wrote to Governor Curtain condemning Pro Slavery Nations.

Washington, D.C.

Honorable Gentleman,

There is an attempt to construct a new Nation wanting to maintain and enlarge and perpetuate human slavery.

No such Embryo State should ever be recognized by or admitted into the family of Christian and Civilized nations and that all men everywhere should by all lawful means, resist to the utmost, such recognition or admission.

Resist… such recognition!
Abraham Lincoln
