Rising from the downtown is a plot of four acres which were set aside in 1785 through the original town plan for the hoped-for establishment of Harrisburg as the state capital.
The area is named Soldiers' and Sailors Grove, and it is a tree-lined mall behind the state capitol building in Harrisburg. The park serves as a memorial to all Pennsylvanians who have served in the U. S. armed forces.
Included within ribbon-like bands that represent various conflicts are the names of each Congressional Medal of Honor winner for that conflict from Pennsylvania.
Pennsylvania is second only to New York in the number of Medal of Honor recipients.
